Environmental Governance and Key Sustainability Trends
In the final part of our series with Arshad Rab, we discuss environmental governance, corporate social responsibility and sustainability trends businesses should look out for.
Giles: I was going to ask you about environmental social governance and corporate social responsibility and it’s quite interesting, I think, that you’ve just touched on supply chain just in our answers to the previous question in relation to those issues, because clearly with the direction of finance across the world in terms of single business, but also particularly in the EU, something which is driving finance is primarily those governors which are now pushing sustainable finance in the right direction and issues like divestment and everything else, supply chain being a huge part of that. If we’re looking at companies and their impacts down the supply chain into the developing world and how ESG and CSR can govern which companies are successful in the EU based on what they’re doing in different parts of the world with supply chain, I don’t know if you might have something to tell us about perhaps the future of ESG and CSR and finance and how you might see that increasingly influencing sustainable business in EU over the next few years.
Arshad Rab: This is something that we work with every day. This is a topic of its own. If you don’t mind, I’d like to offer a separate sitting on it because it’s an issue of its own. It’s very difficult to summarize in a sentence or two. But all I can say is there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. What has been done so far is not advocate. And you talked about CSR. This thing started way back, and it gives kind of an impression that it’s something voluntary, like, you just do it because you just want to be philanthropic, or you just want to do some socially good or something like that. But I think that era is behind us. I think we’re moving or we need to move from corporate social responsibility to corporate accountability. And I think that is something. And another thing I can say is that whatever has been done so far, say reporting tools and all that, we all have inherent problems as far as achieving the end goal is concerned. Let me go back to my offer. This is a huge issue and a huge subject. You also talked about sustainable finance. We work day-in and day-out with that. So like I said, let us have, if you don’t mind. But it is an issue of concern. And yes, there is a lot of work to be done in order to steer the whole conversation. Then what happens on the ground at the right track at this point in time? I think we are just not there. But yes, the environment has been created. The groundwork has been done so that we can take it from here to where we want to be.
Giles: Yeah, no problem. Okay. Well, perhaps we can return to that in the future. It is a massive subject, I do appreciate I’m conscious we’ve have been chatting for 20 minutes or so. I’ll wind things up. I wonder if you had any sort of perhaps just a quick summation of key sustainability trends which EU corporates ought to be aware of and perhaps a single piece of advice for them on sustainability just to close our conversation.
Arshad Rab: I think every business needs to revisit their business models not only because of green but also because whether they want to survive in the future and one thing I can talk about is we need to quickly move away from take make waste economy take the resources from the Earth make things and just expose them, put them in the landfills we need to move away, we need to go through borrow from the Earth, share and return to the Earth, I think that is something we need to talk about and that is the sustainability trend that we need to follow.
Giles: Fascinating that sounds like circularity I think or is the way that we tend to raise it in the OK. Brilliant, thank you so much Arshad, that’s great. Thanks so much for joining us and for your time and hopefully we can revisit again and maybe talk a little bit more about the finance side as well.
Arshad Rab: Sure
Giles: Fantastic.
Arshad Rab: Thank you.
Giles: Brilliant, thank you very much.
Arshad Rab: Take care.
Giles: Thanks bye.
