How Can Companies Prepare to Go Green?

When evaluating costs, it’s important to take a strategic approach – it is highly unlikely that a medium or moderate-sized company will be able to become completely sustainable in one go, the tasks need to be broken down into urgent, important, and no immediate change required.

These items can then be prioritised and compared against the company budget – allowing for urgent matters to be addressed without putting the company in financial hardship.

There are very good reasons why your company should be prepared for a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future:

  • People are willing to pay more for your products or services
  • Employees are attracted to working for ethical and sustainable employers
  • Productivity can be improved
  • The company reputation will grow positively
  • Savings from clean energy etc, can be used to offset the setup costs

Another cost that needs to be considered, when looking to hit sustainability targets, is offsets. For example, you may be working on a new improved way of reducing your CO2 emissions, but it will take 2-3 years for the full benefit to materialise; in the meantime, you purchase an offset (a credit where someone else reduces the amount of harmful emissions on your behalf), so that you can reach your target emission figure earlier.

Offsets shouldn’t be used in isolation, it doesn’t make a positive impact on employees, investors, or customers, to see businesses claiming to be Net Zero when they’re still actively utilising practices that spew forth harmful gasses, and are literally just paying their way into a sustainable image.

How Long Will It Take for Everyone to Go Green?

The change from existing processes to sustainability isn’t a short one, and the target dates do keep getting extended (such as 2030, and now 2050) – but there will come a point where they cannot be pushed any further, and real change has to be made before the damage to the environment and the world becomes permanent.

For smaller companies, the change to sustainability may be quicker and easier to implement than larger corporations, and some industries are hampered by needing to innovate new technologies and processes in order to reach their goals. But, with everyone working together, and doing their bit to support the planet, there is no reason to think that these sustainable goals can’t be met or even exceeded, and that future business will be leading the way in environmental preservation.
