Pitfalls and Problems to Avoid When Implementing Disabled Access
There are a lot of difficulties to navigate in making an accessible environment, but some of the main barriers that disabled workers struggle to overcome include:
- Difficulties with transportation and access to the location
- Skills training and mentoring being unsuitable in format
- Anxiety and lack of confidence that they will be supported by management
- Attitudes of employers and fellow employees
In order to be a business that truly champions diversity and inclusivity, there is more to be done than simply making a location accessible – it requires the company culture to be one that is positive, welcoming, accessible, and adaptable.
When you’re working on your disabled access plan, you need to think of the physical issues, but you must not neglect the mental and emotional ones as well.
Training for your staff should include inclusivity, as well as clearly defining what is and isn’t acceptable in the work environment; as we mentioned – disability discrimination can have serious consequences, and it’s important that all of your team are aware of this.
Managing Your Actions
It is important that you keep track of what you’re doing to make your workplace more accessible, not just to help your employees, but also to keep you on track for any targets, and to monitor what actions have been proved effective, and how you can make your company better year on year.
