Having a diverse workforce, company, and even product range can be a real benefit to your business, especially if you’re trying to reach new targets. By bringing in local workers in international locations, you’re broadening the diversity of your company without having to resort to affirmative action – and you’re accessing a whole range of new talent and ideas that can benefit your business.

Not all businesses are available in all locations and reaching out from a saturated market into a new location, where competitors aren’t operating, can not only give you time to establish yourself as a brand leader, but also to gain the sales that they’re missing out on.

International and overseas locations have their own laws and regulations, and in some cases these affect setup costs, running costs, and the requirements for staffing costs. It’s important to find a sensible balance (for example, minimum wage in one country may be a fraction of the level that it is in your own – but it doesn’t mean that you should only pay that amount, because if people feel you’re treating workers like slaves, they’re going to boycott your products), but generally lower costs can make for higher profits.

Cons of International Expansion

Unfortunately, as with everything in business – there are downsides to consider and carefully weigh up before making your decision, these include:

  • Differences in international laws being complex and hard to navigate.
  • Local unwillingness to support foreign business over domestic options.
  • Setup costs and development time dependant on location.
  • Some areas may be susceptible to corruption that can delay operations or establishment.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide what’s best for your business, if international expansion is right for you, and how you’re going to take it forward – but careful research, and an eyes-open approach are key to ensuring that you know exactly what you’re getting into before you start.
