From the Metaverse to ESG to Hyperscale Cloud, we go through ten of the most significant technology trends to expect in 2022. | Future Business

6: 5G Adoption

While an upgrade to mobile phone network standards may not seem the most exciting innovation, the roll-out of 5G may be one of the most well-known trends on this list and 2022 looks set to be the year when it truly takes off.

Ben Wood, analyst at CCS Insight, states: “We believe that 2022 is poised to be the year when 5G becomes a mass-market offering, with strong adoption of 5G-capable smartphones and more comprehensive network coverage.”

While the pandemic and global chip shortages have dampened demand in recent years, growth in 5G networks is expected to continue apace in 2022. Worldwide connections to 5G networks are expected to more than double this year, reaching over 1 billion by December and more than 3.6 billion globally by 2025.

7: AI

Long touted as a technological panacea, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is nonetheless making steady inroads in many business domains and is forecast to see record deployment in 2022. While the promise of sentient robots remains a long way off, AI will be increasingly rolled-out to validate, test and automate business processes.

“The focus will shift more toward AI-enabled transformation that solves more significant business problems with business-focused solutions,” Jerry Kurtz, executive VP for Insights & Data at Capgemini Americas, explains “In 2022, expect AI engagements to become larger, more strategically significant, and more mission-critical – with a focus on long-term scalability.”

8: ESG

With climate change very firmly on the business agenda in 2022, the drive to introduce new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) tools will be supercharged this year.

“We are seeing 2022 as the year when ESG not only becomes mainstream, but it starts driving markets a lot more,” Aniket Shah, global head of sustainability research at investment bank Jefferies, said. Investment inflows for ESG exchange traded funds are set to double in 2022, according to Franklin Templeton, building on an already record US$120 billion in 2021.

9: Smart textiles

The latest trend in the textiles industry promises to extend far beyond the clothing and fashion sector as decades of laboratory research transform what firms can do with fabrics. From antimicrobial surfaces to embedded electronics and durable, water-wicking materials, new smart textiles allow businesses of all sizes to operate more effectively and bring new products to market more efficiently.

The Global Smart Textiles Market is projected to exceed US$7.8 billion by 2026 and Christian Dalsgaard, CEOof Smart Textile Alliance, notes “The smart textile market is growing across many industries… In 5-10 years’ time, Smart Textiles may well be less of a discrete technology and far more of a commonplace product.”

10: Blockchain technology

Since the creation of Bitcoin in 2008, the concept of blockchain has evolved considerably and while the realm of cryptocurrency may remain volatile the decentralized, peer-to-peer nature of blockchain is underpinning a range of new business technologies.

The mainstream awareness of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) last year is the latest in a line of innovations and in 2022 firms will increasingly turn to blockchain to provide transparency, security and trust.

“Everyone is talking about blockchain,” Haydn Jones, Senior Blockchain Market Specialist at PwC, notes, “Today it’s disrupting business models all over the world, from supply chain to retail and healthcare.”

2022 is set to be another standout year when it comes to technology so it is crucial that business keep up to date with the latest technology trends that develop.
